MINNEAPOLIS (AP) – The Minnesota Timberwolves completed a financial move regarding point guard Mike Conley Jr. by re-signing the 19-year veteran on Wednesday, two weeks after trading him away.

Conley was first traded in a three-team deal to the Chicago Bulls, who then included him with Coby White in a swap with the Charlotte Hornets the next day. Subsequently, Conley was waived.

His double trade made Conley eligible to return to the Timberwolves, who were able to sign him to a minimum contract after reducing their luxury tax bill below the first apron by getting rid of his original salary.

By staying under the first apron and following the associated regulations, the Timberwolves gained salary cap flexibility to acquire guard Ayo Dosunmu in a separate deal with the Bulls.

While Conley’s performance and playing time decreased this season, he has been highly respected on the team for his leadership, intelligence, and experience.

He is a four-time recipient of the NBA Sportsmanship Award and a two-time recipient of the league’s teammate of the year award.

The Timberwolves (34-22) currently hold the sixth spot in the Western Conference. They will face the Dallas Mavericks at home on Friday in their first game following the All-Star break.
