It is an American provocation, to call on Europe to take responsibility. US Vice President JD Vance declared on Wednesday that the suspension of American military aid to Ukraine was “one of the greatest achievements of the Trump administration.”
“One of the things I am most proud of in this administration is telling Europe that if they want to buy weapons, they can, but the United States will no longer buy weapons to send to Ukraine,” he stated at an event organized by Turning Point USA.
“Europe must accelerate”
Following his provocative statements, the top Pentagon official Elbridge Colby warned that future military support to Ukraine cannot depend on the United States, putting pressure on the Old Continent.
“Europe must accelerate its assumption of primary responsibility for conventional defense of the continent,” he stated. “This is not a choice, but a strategic necessity,” he added in a speech given this week in Berlin by the Ukraine Defense Contact Group and published Thursday evening on X.
As reported by Politico, American military aid to Ukraine nearly disappeared under the presidency of Donald Trump. According to the Kiel Support Tracker, it decreased by 99% in 2025.
Washington is now willing to sell arms to Kiev, only if they are financed by other allies under the “Ukraine Prioritized Needs List” program led by NATO. The program raised 3.7 billion euros last year for the purchase of armaments.
