“In Madrid, failure has never been and will never be an option.” This is the message that Kylian Mbappé wanted to convey following Real Madrid’s elimination in the Champions League quarter-finals.
The promise of Mbappé to the fans
A week after their defeat at home (2-1), Alvaro Arbeloa’s men put up a fierce fight against Bayern Munich on Wednesday at the Allianz Arena, before succumbing in the final minutes after Eduardo Camavinga’s expulsion. Beaten 4-3, they fell with honors, but are now facing the threat of a trophyless season, as they are nine points behind Barcelona in La Liga.
“We fought until the end, but it wasn’t enough,” wrote Mbappé on his Instagram account. “It’s disappointing to be eliminated from such an important competition, but we must move forward. We need to take a hard look at ourselves to avoid experiencing this kind of disappointment again. We will never give up!!! I promise you one thing: we will start winning again, very soon,” concluded the captain of the French national team, scorer in both legs against Bayern.
As explained by RMC Sport, this Champions League elimination is expected to trigger a movement in Madrid with the search for a new coach and a squad to be reshaped. Free after the World Cup, Didier Deschamps is notably on the shortlist of Madrid’s top brass to succeed Arbeloa.
