In Maryland, the Maryland Vax Act has been signed into law by Gov. Wes Moore. This new legislation decouples the state’s vaccination guidance from federal directives.

The law gives authority to Maryland’s Department of Health Secretary to issue official recommendations for immunizations, screenings, and disease prevention measures in the state. The Governor’s Office states that this change will prioritize guidance from organizations like the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Academy of Family Physicians over federal guidance.

Health Secretary Dr. Meena Seshamani emphasizes that the Vax Act is focused on protecting public health. “We will continue to provide Marylanders with guidance and recommendations based on rigorous, evidence-based science,” Dr. Seshamani said.

This law comes after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reduced the number of recommended routine vaccinations from 18 to 11 on Jan. 5.

Governor Moore highlighted the importance of basing Maryland’s vaccine policy on science rather than conspiracy theories. He also stated that the Vax Act is a response to changes made during the Trump Administration and is part of ongoing efforts to ensure vaccine access for Maryland residents.

Other measures included in the Vax Act are requirements for insurance to cover vaccines, authorization for pharmacists to administer flu and COVID vaccines, and an immunization program for under-insured adults.
