Workshop on documentary research

Documentary research is undergoing significant changes. Faced with the rise of artificial intelligence, the BnF is seeking to evolve its documentary research services to adapt to current practices.

To achieve this, it has turned to the Community of Users.

One workshop, two formats

At the end of March and beginning of April 2026, 16 members of the Community participated in two workshops dedicated to their practices and expectations regarding documentary research.

To ensure everyone could contribute, the BnF offered two formats: an in-person session on March 30 at the François-Mitterrand Library, and an online session on April 2.

The discussions were based on participatory tools adapted to each format: a deck of cards for the in-person session, and a collaborative Padlet for the online session.

Questions at the heart of real uses

The workshop aimed to better understand how users conduct their documentary research, which BnF tools and services they are familiar with and use, and what forms of support they expect (whether personalized assistance, thematic workshops, or resources to enhance autonomy).

From one participant to another, profiles and practices vary. Readers, researchers, students, or teachers each build their own relationship with documentary research, often combining preparation beforehand, on-site exploration, and occasional help from staff in the room. Human mediation remains essential, regardless of the users’ digital skills.

Participants also expressed expectations regarding the accessibility and readability of services, hoping for better coordination between existing tools and greater visibility of available resources. Finally, the question of artificial intelligence naturally arose in the discussions. While its limitations are well identified, participants see potential in BnF’s own AI to guide research and recommend resources, without replacing the richness of human contact.

We sincerely thank all the members of the Community who took the time to participate and share their experiences. Their feedback will allow the Department of Discovery and Support in Research to adapt its services to better meet the needs and real paths of users.
