SAN ANTONIO – North Side man accused of stabbing wife who neighbors say he cared for
A North Side senior stands accused of stabbing his 79-year-old wife, leaving her critically injured. Neighbors described him as a “dedicated caregiver” to the woman.
San Antonio police discovered the couple after 8 a.m. Tuesday inside their home on West Lullwood Avenue near Hildebrand Avenue.
Public Information Officer Sharavious Jackson stated that the couple’s son called 911 upon finding them.
“The mom called the son, letting the son know that, ‘Hey, your dad is acting really strange,'” Jackson said.
Shortly after, police arrived at the scene along with an ambulance and detained the woman’s 82-year-old husband.
He is expected to face charges of aggravated assault.
Neighbor Pam Flather, who knew the couple for around 20 years, recounted seeing multiple police cars outside the couple’s residence. She mentioned that the wife had been bedridden for some time and expressed shock upon learning about the stabbing.
While the type of weapon used was not disclosed, the stabbing left the woman in critical condition.
Neighbors near the crime scene wondered if there was anything they could have done to aid the couple.
Flather expressed that the husband’s actions seemed out of character, emphasizing his history as a devoted caregiver to his wife.
“I could see if he was disoriented or something like that, but never in his regular capacity could he ever do any harm,” Flather said.
Letty Inabinet and her husband operate Visiting Angels in Windcrest, an organization offering in-home assistance to local veterans and seniors, aiming to alleviate the burden for their families.
Inabinet, a veteran herself, emphasized the challenges families face caring for loved ones and the importance of seeking help before reaching burnout or tragic outcomes.
She advised families not to delay in exploring other support options.
The Alamo Area Council of Governments’ (AACOG) Alamo Service Connection suggests the following tips to manage caregiver stress:
- Prioritize self-care: Your needs are as important as the needs of the person you care for. These needs include doing things that interest you and bring you joy.
- Recognize when you need to take breaks: Schedule respite time for yourself and honor each appointment.
- Admit when you need help and accept it: Create a plan that works for you and allow others to assist.
- Build a strong support system: Connect with a trusted friend or confidant who genuinely listens. Consider joining a caregiver group for additional support.
- Get connected to local resources: Contact your local Area Agency on Aging by calling the Alamo Service Connection at 210-477-3275.
