The UN Secretary-General called on Tuesday for “serious negotiations” to end the war in the Middle East, stating that there is “no military solution” to the crisis. Antonio Guterres emphasized the need for peace agreements to require persistent political engagement and negotiations. He also stressed the importance of upholding the ceasefire between the US and Iran, as well as respecting freedom of navigation, including in the Strait of Hormuz.

Guterres urged for restraint, responsibility, and diplomacy to prevent escalation, emphasizing the importance of respecting international law, which is being “trampled” worldwide. He warned that disregarding the law leads to chaos, suffering, and destruction.

Regarding direct talks between Israel and Lebanon, Guterres expressed skepticism about them solving all problems but noted their potential to influence actors’ behavior positively. He criticized Israel and Hezbollah for supposedly “aiding each other” to destabilize the Lebanese government.

Guterres called for Israel and Lebanon to work together rather than perpetuate negative actions, highlighting the need for collaboration.
