On the Monday morning after Péter Magyar’s electoral triumph on Sunday, the Respekt website reported that: “« Orbán has lost. And with him, BabiÅ¡ and his coalition partners ». The chief editor of the liberal weekly sees the Hungarian election results as good news for the Czech Republic and Europe.

With over 53% of the votes and 138 out of 199 seats in the Hungarian National Assembly, the opposition party Tizsa not only ended Viktor Orbán’s sixteen-year rule but also obtained a constitutional majority. This victory was accompanied by a record-high voter turnout of nearly 78%. This outcome is expected to pave the way for dismantling Orbán’s legacy and shifting Hungary towards liberal democracies.

In response to these results, Czech leaders had varying reactions. Prime Minister Andrej BabiÅ¡ congratulated Péter Magyar on his victory, expressing readiness for cooperation between Hungary and the Czech Republic due to their close relations. On the contrary, Foreign Minister Petr Macinka voiced disappointment over losing Orbán as an EU ally, highlighting common ground between Magyar’s Tizsa movement and Orbán’s Fidesz party.

There is now speculation about the future of the Visegrád Group, an alliance of Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, and Slovakia. The election outcome could potentially revitalize this political alliance in Central Europe. Magyar’s planned visit to Poland suggests better relations between Budapest and Warsaw, with potential implications for regional cooperation.

Overall, the election results in Hungary are seen as a game-changer for Czech politics, with both concern and hope expressed by different leaders. This victory is expected to set a new political course in the Czech Republic, as observed from Prague.
