The young French-American singer who will represent France at the Eurovision Song Contest has opened up to BFMTV just over a month before the competition, which is taking place this year in Vienna.

At just 17 years old, Monroe is getting ready to represent France at the Eurovision contest. The grand final of the European singing contest will take place on May 16th in Vienna, Austria.

With her song “Regarde!”, the young artist will have to showcase France against its 34 competing countries. European bookmakers currently place her in second position overall, just behind Finland.

A little over a month before the big day, the French-American answered questions from BFM.

“What does it feel like to represent France at Eurovision?” “It’s a great honor for me. I’m so excited to be on that stage and to share a moment with everyone. It has always been a big dream for me.”

“You grew up in the United States, was French culture important at home?” “Yes, very, very important. My parents always made sure that we, the children, were immersed in both cultures at home. So we always had Eurovision playing French songs. I remember my mom in the car listening to Lara Fabian and Barbara, it was great.”

“What did you listen to as a child?” “When I was little, I remember ‘Une colombe’ by Céline Dion, ‘L’aigle noire’, ‘Göttingen’, ‘Je t’aime’… All these songs, those from Johnny Hallyday, Jean-Jacques Goldman too (…) there was a love for great voices.”

“When did you start singing?” “When I was 7 and a half years old, my parents inspired me. I listened to a lot of music with my dad. He admired how singers could express emotions, even through a camera, touch people and create a connection.”

“You have an extraordinary voice, between opera and pop” “I am a soprano, but I like to mix some serious moments with very high parts. I think it’s fun to do that. I have always listened to a mix of both, classical music and pop, with musical comedy.”

With “Regarde!” (her song for Eurovision), it was mainly this idea of mixing these two worlds, opera and pop. And also a bit of musical comedy. I find it fascinating to mix and see how these worlds can connect and find a way to our hearts.

“Where does your look come from?” “I have always done braids since I was very young. It’s also a big part of my culture. I really enjoyed doing it with my mom who braided me since I was very young and I always found it cool. So I kept them.”

“What will your performance at Eurovision look like?” “It’s going to be a surprise, I can tell you we will have dancers.”

“How do you handle the pressure at 17 years old?” “Every day I wake up and think about how lucky I am to represent my culture on a stage like this. So for me, it’s a great honor to be able to represent my culture, this song, this story on a stage like this with all of Europe. I am very proud to be in this position (…) I can’t wait.”
