Jannik Sinner regains first place in the ATP ranking. This Sunday, April 12, the Italian tennis player defeated Carlos Alcaraz in the Monte-Carlo Masters 1000 final, winning in two sets 7-6 (5), 6-3 and thus securing his third consecutive tournament victory after Indian Wells and Miami, which allowed him to achieve the historic Sunshine Double.
This triumph against his Spanish rival had a different taste, as it marked Sinner’s return to the top of the ATP ranking after 66 weeks. Alcaraz entered the tournament with the 1,000 points he earned from his victory the previous year, while the Italian was suspended in the Clostebol case.
After the Sunshine Double, Sinner had already closed in on Alcaraz’s record. Thanks to his victory in Miami, following Indian Wells, the Italian tennis player reached 12,400 points, which was 1,190 points less than Alcaraz, who was eliminated in the third round by Korda.
Sinner then sealed his quest for the world number one ranking with his triumph in Monte-Carlo. By winning the final in the Principality, despite Alcaraz’s loss in the final, the Italian climbed to the top of the ATP ranking. The South Tyrolean now totals 13,400 points, while Alcaraz follows closely at 13,240. The Murcian can quickly reclaim the top spot; all he needs to do is win the ATP tournament in Barcelona, which begins tomorrow. Alcaraz is the top seed on the Catalan clay court.
