HAMILTON TWP. – Bob Bradley didn’t expect to attend the 33rd Mercer County Soccer Hall of Fame Dinner. Not because he didn’t want to, but because his son Michael’s Red Bulls were playing against Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami at the same time. However, a call from Mercer County Soccer Hall of Fame VP Charlie Inverso changed his plans.
“They just did a poll of the greatest players ever,” Inverso jokingly said, “and Messi came in fourth.” Bradley was surprised by this and mentioned other legendary players like Pelé, Maradona, and Cruyff as potential top contenders.
Inverso humorously replied, “Billy Gazonas, Drew Fallon, and Danny Donigan!” This lighthearted exchange led to a last-minute decision for Bradley to attend his induction into the Mercer County Soccer Hall of Fame at the Hibernian Club of Hamilton.
Reflecting on his connection to Mercer County, Bradley emphasized the community’s passion for soccer and their contributions to the sport. Despite being from North Jersey, his ties to the area are profound, having played and coached at Princeton University, achieving success both as a player and a coach.
Bradley’s illustrious coaching career includes stints with various teams in Major League Soccer and leading the United States men’s national team at the 2010 World Cup. He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to represent the national team, symbolizing the passing of the baton from generations of soccer enthusiasts.
After coaching internationally, Bradley returned to MLS with successful tenures at Los Angeles FC and Toronto FC. However, he credits his formative experiences in Mercer County for shaping his path to success in the soccer world.
At the Hall of Fame event, Bradley was inducted alongside other distinguished individuals, teams, and players. The ceremony celebrated the rich history of soccer in Mercer County and honored those who have made significant contributions to the sport.
Overall, Bob Bradley’s journey from Mercer County to the global soccer stage exemplifies the enduring impact of grassroots soccer communities in nurturing talent and shaping the future of the sport.
