A man armed with a machete injured three people at Grand Central Station in New York City before being shot dead by police on Saturday. The incident took place on the 4, 5, 6 subway platform around 9:40 a.m. after a civilian alerted officers. The 44-year-old man was behaving erratically and refused to drop the knife, even after multiple orders from the officers. He was pronounced dead at Bellevue Hospital. The slashing victims, an 84-year-old man, a 65-year-old man, and a 70-year-old woman, are in stable condition.
Amid the police investigation, the MTA announced that 4, 5, 6, and 7 trains would bypass Grand Central, causing delays. New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani praised the NYPD for their quick response in preventing further violence. Governor Kathy Hochul also commended the swift action of the officers and mentioned that an internal investigation is underway.
The NYPD issued alerts to avoid the area around Grand Central following the incident. Body-worn camera footage will be released as part of the standard procedure in such cases. This is a developing story, and updates can be found on CBS News New York.
