Michigan State’s former star goaltender officially earned the title of best player in his position in college hockey. Trey Augustine, from MSU, was awarded the prestigious Mike Richter Award in Las Vegas. Augustine, who missed the event due to his pro debut with the Grand Rapids Griffins, became the first goalkeeper from the Spartans to win since the award’s establishment in 2014. He is also the fourth goalie from the Big Ten to receive this accolade.

“It’s an honor and a privilege to receive this award,” expressed Augustine in a press release. “So many great goalies before me have achieved this, and to be up there with them means a lot.”

Augustine triumphed over two other finalists, Michael Hrbal from UMass and Josh Kotai from Augustana, to win the award. His exceptional performance during his junior season, with a .929 save percentage, a 2.11 goals-against average, and a 24-9-1 record, solidified his credentials for the award. Augustine was also honored as a first-team CCM/ACHA All-American.

Joining Augustine on the first-team All-American list is forward Porter Martone, who led Michigan State in scoring with 50 points, scoring 25 goals and providing 25 assists during his debut season. His impressive stats ranked him high nationally.

Martone, selected by the Philadelphia Flyers in the 2025 NHL Draft, has made an impactful start in the NHL with two goals and four assists in six games while maintaining a plus-three rating.

On the second-team All-American roster is senior forward Charlie Stramel, who accumulated 44 points last season, scoring 19 goals and assisting with 25. Unfortunately, due to an ankle injury sustained during MSU’s regional final loss to Wisconsin, Stramel’s pro career debut has been delayed. Despite being selected by the Minnesota Wild in the 2023 NHL Draft, Stramel has not been able to join the team due to his injury.
