Traders work on the floor of the NYSE in New York
The New York Stock Exchange opened in mixed order on Friday, with investors examining March inflation figures while closely monitoring events in the Middle East.
In early trading, the Dow Jones index lost 5.30 points, or 0.01% to 48,180.50, and the broader Standard & Poor’s 500 rose by 0.24% to 6,840.84 points.
The Nasdaq Composite increased by 0.41%, or 92.56 points, to 22,914.98 points.
Operators remain attentive to the ceasefire developments in the Middle East, which are fragile and urging caution, leading to extremely volatile markets.
Pakistan is set to host delegations from Iran and the United States on Friday for peace talks, 42 days after the start of a conflict that triggered a spike in oil prices and sparked inflation concerns.
“Investors could have an anxious weekend, waiting for indications of whether a lasting peace is possible,” said Dan Coatsworth, market leader at AJ Bell.
US consumer prices saw a significant acceleration in March, as predicted due to the war’s impact on energy prices.
Operators continue to bet on the Federal Reserve maintaining its interest rates unchanged this year, as they previously expected two rate cuts before the conflict began.
“Inflation remains persistent – and this suggests, in the best case scenario, that the surge in energy prices will be a temporary obstacle rather than a sustainable adjustment,” said Bret Kenwell, American investment analyst at eToro.
San Francisco Federal Reserve President Mary Daly said in an interview with Reuters that the oil shock caused by the war in Iran is expected to delay when inflation reaches the 2% target.
In stocks, CoreWeave, which announced on Friday an agreement with Anthropic to provide cloud computing capabilities to the AI startup, rose by 2.4%.
TSMC’s New York-listed stock gained 2.3%, the world’s largest contract chipmaker reporting a 35% increase in first-quarter revenue.
