The Director of the Holy See Press Office has announced Pope Leo’s upcoming Apostolic Journey to Algeria, Cameroon, Angola, and Equatorial Guinea. The itinerary will reflect the diversity of histories, cultures, and traditions in the four countries.
Matteo Bruni, the Director of the Holy See Press Office, provided details of Pope Leo XIV’s journey scheduled from April 13 to April 23. The trip will include visits to Algeria, Cameroon, Angola, and Equatorial Guinea.
During a press conference, Bruni shared that the journey will span eleven days and will involve delivering speeches in English, French, Portuguese, and Spanish. The Pope will address themes such as peace, migration, environment, youth, and the family. It was also mentioned that no additional security measures are planned for the visit.
This will be the Pope’s longest journey to date, including his first visit to Algeria in decades, as well as visits to Cameroon, Angola, and Equatorial Guinea. The itinerary will take him through places with varied cultural and linguistic backgrounds, along with social and political challenges like conflict, migration, and religious coexistence.
The visit to Algeria will focus on St. Augustine’s legacy, Christian presence in North Africa, dialogue with the Muslim world, and migration issues. In Cameroon, known as “Africa in miniature,” the Pope is expected to speak on topics like peace, coexistence, youth, and human development. Angola will highlight the role of young people, resources, corruption, and colonial history, while Equatorial Guinea will emphasize culture, education, and the Church’s peace-keeping efforts in the region.
The papal delegation will consist of representatives from different Dicasteries and African Cardinals. Pope Leo is anticipated to hold a press conference during his flight back to Rome at the conclusion of the journey.
