Nathan Johnson, 48, was arrested at a local scrapyard for attempting to sell stolen copper pipes and materials taken from Bethel AME Church in Harrisburg, causing significant damage to the HVAC system. According to police, the break-ins left the church without heat or water ahead of Easter services. Johnson, who is homeless, was charged with burglary, theft, criminal mischief, vandalism, and theft of metals. He and another suspect allegedly stole copper pipes, wiring, a water pump, and microwave ovens from the church, resulting in an estimated $100,000 in damages. The suspects fled the scene when confronted by the church pastor and facilities manager, but Johnson was later identified through surveillance footage and witnesses. Johnson admitted to the break-ins and is currently held in Dauphin County Prison on bail. The investigation is ongoing to identify the second suspect involved.
