The 79th Cannes Film Festival is set to take place from May 12 to 23, 2026, under the presidency of South Korean filmmaker Park Chan-wook. With global filmmakers exploring various societal and historical themes, the festival remains a beacon of artistic expression and cinematic diversity. This year’s selection includes films that reflect the extraordinary vitality of world cinema.

Notable entries feature compelling narratives such as the first part of a two-part series on Charles de Gaulle (“The Iron Age”), directed by Antonin Baudry, and “Moulin” by László Nemes, which chronicles the story of a Resistance hero. Additionally, Belgian director Emmanuel Marre delves into Vichy France in “Our Salvation,” while Paweł Pawlikowski presents “1949,” focusing on post-war Germany.

The official competition lineup includes works by renowned filmmakers like Pedro Almodóvar, Asghar Farhadi, and Ryusuke Hamaguchi, alongside emerging talents. With 21 films competing for the prestigious Palme d’Or, the festival promises a diverse selection of cinematic experiences. The Palme d’honneur will be awarded to Peter Jackson and Barbra Streisand.

In the official selection, notable films include Pedro Almodóvar’s “Bitter Christmas,” Asghar Farhadi’s “Parallel Stories,” and Hirokazu Kore-eda’s “Sheep in the Box.” Director Steven Soderbergh will also premiere “John Lennon: The Last Interview” as part of the special screenings.
