Reconstruction through sport: A day of solidarity and resilience

Organized in the spirit deeply rooted in military values such as solidarity, commitment, and cohesion, this day brought together military personnel, wounded individuals, instructors, partners, and the general public around a common goal: to demonstrate the essential role of sport in the physical and psychological reconstruction process.

A morning dedicated to reflection and sharing

After an opening ceremony in the school parade ground, a conference on the link between sport and reconstruction through rehabilitation took place. It addressed the human, medical, and social challenges related to supporting wounded military personnel. The presentations by EPMS instructors highlighted the central role of physical activity among military personnel, ESCA’s daily commitment to the health and personalized sports recovery of all its trainees and staff, and how sport becomes a lever for adaptation to rebuild after an injury.

The morning continued at 10 a.m. with the screening of the film “La chance d’un second souffle” in the presence of director Laurent Etchamendy and wounded military personnel who participated in the film. The amphitheater was filled with spectators for this screening, followed by an exchange with other members of Team Invictus France and Gaël Rivière, president of the French Handisport Federation and international French cécifoot player, gold medalist at the last Olympic and Paralympic Games in Paris.

Sport as a vector of inclusion and reconstruction

The afternoon was dedicated to practice, with a series of inclusive handisport workshops open to everyone. Participants had the opportunity to discover and try different disciplines like wheelchair rugby, boccia, laser shooting, blowpipe, para-athletics, sitting volleyball, and paracycling. This moment allowed members of Team Invictus France and wounded military personnel to share their sports practice and interact with workshop participants.

An emotional gala match

At the end of the day on the Nordez gymnasium field in Cherbourg, Les Homards du Cotentin (Cherbourg handisports team) and Team France from the Invictus Games engaged in an intense wheelchair rugby and wheelchair basketball match. In the stands, numerous spectators – including Manche senator Sébastien Fagnen – fully supported the event, encouraging every action alongside the mascots.

Sport, a pillar of reconstruction

This day served as a reminder of how sport is an essential tool for reconstruction, especially in the military environment where notions of cohesion, mutual aid, and resilience hold a central place.

Through meetings, testimonies, and sports performances, the Day of Reconstruction through Sport organized by ESCA demonstrated that disability is not a limit, but a starting point. That injury, no matter how painful, can become the driver of self-transcendence, and that sport offers everyone the opportunity to reinvent themselves, regain confidence, and reconnect with the collective. A conviction now shared by an entire garrison.
