Barcelona incensed by penalty not given in heavy defeat to Atletico Madrid
Barcelona was left fuming after their 2-0 defeat to Atletico Madrid in the first leg of the Champions League quarter-finals. The Catalans were particularly upset by the dismissal of Pau Cubarsi in the first half, followed by a handball incident involving defender Marc Pubill which went uncalled for a penalty.
Barcelona coach Hansi Flick demanded a penalty and a red card against Pubill for the controversial handball incident. However, the referee and VAR did not intervene, leading to frustration and criticism from the Barcelona camp.
Former Spanish referee Eduardo Iturralde emphasized that the handball was clear and that the decision not to award a penalty was scandalous. Barcelona players also expressed their disappointment over the incident, highlighting the clear violation of the rules.
Atletico Madrid defended the referee’s decision, with goalkeeper Juan Musso stating that Pubill did not take advantage of the situation and downplayed the significance of the incident. The debate continued with differing opinions from both camps.
Similar incidents in recent matches, such as Arsenal’s Gabriel escaping punishment for a similar offense and Aston Villa being penalized for it, raised questions about consistency in applying the rules within football. These controversial decisions have sparked debates within the football community.
