Military Central Role
Before this planned meeting at 3:30 p.m. (9:30 p.m. in France) at the White House, the NATO Secretary-General met with Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Their discussions focused on military operations against Iran, the war in Ukraine, and strengthening coordination and the “shift of burdens” with NATO allies, according to a statement from a State Department spokesperson, Tommy Pigott.
The United States has played a central military role within NATO since its creation in 1949, but last year they secured a significant increase in defense spending from other Alliance members by 2035. Facing Donald Trump, Mark Rutte will once again have to rely on his personal relationship with the American president to try to calm his harsh criticisms of the organization.
