The UNESCO Office in Mali participated in the World Water Day celebration on Sunday, March 22, 2026. The opening ceremony was presided over by the Prime Minister, General Division Abdoulaye Maïga, in the presence of the Minister of Energy and Water, Prof. Tiémoko Traoré, several government officials, as well as the Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany in Mali, representing the lead technical and financial partners in the water and sanitation sector in Mali.
Themed “Water, a Source of Equality,” the day featured a panel of discussions, an inter-university contest on the theme, and exhibition stands showcasing the expertise of water sector actors.
This edition aligns with UNESCO’s vision of promoting equitable and sustainable access to water resources for all. With over 50 years of expertise in water sciences, UNESCO supports member states in understanding, sustainable management, and governance of water resources, contributing to achieving Sustainable Development Goal 6. This commitment is realized through two major programs: the Intergovernmental Hydrological Program (IHP) and the Global Program for the Assessment of Water Resources.
UNESCO reaffirms its commitment to the Government of Mali, particularly the Ministry of Energy and Water, through the National Directorate of Hydraulics, to promote inclusive, sustainable, and equitable management of water resources for socio-economic development and the well-being of populations.
