The Ciné-feel association is closing its season with the screening of Federico Fellini’s classic, “I Vitelloni”, on April 10.

To mark the end of its sixth season, aptly named “Anticonformiste !”, the Ciné-feel association invites movie lovers to an exceptional evening dedicated to an Italian cinema masterpiece. Federico Fellini’s masterpiece, “I Vitelloni” (1954), will be screened on Friday, April 10, 2026 at 7:30 p.m. at the Olbia Cinemas in Hyères. This event is more than just a screening, as it will be followed by a discussion and exchange with the audience, in the spirit of sharing that characterizes the association.

A milestone in Italian cinema

Awarded the Silver Lion at the Venice Film Festival in 1953 and nominated for the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay, “I Vitelloni” (literally “The Big Calves”, a term referring to idle youths) is a pivotal work in Federico Fellini’s filmography. The film paints a bittersweet portrait of a group of five young men in a provincial town on the Adriatic coast, suspended between adolescence and adulthood. Unable to leave the family nest and take on responsibilities, they pass the time with pranks, parties, and fleeting dreams of escape. Through this tender and ironic chronicle, Fellini explores themes dear to him: nostalgia, the emptiness of provincial life, male friendship, and the difficulty of growing up. The film is often seen as a semi-autobiographical work, inspired by the director’s youth in Rimini.

The lasting legacy of the “vitelloni”

Beyond its critical and public success, “I Vitelloni” has profoundly influenced cinema, creating a true archetype. The character of the “vitellone”, the immature and dreamy young man, has become a recurring figure in the seventh art, especially in Italy. As noted by film historian Sergio Toffetti in 2009, the film’s influence is significant: “I Vitelloni is a seminal film that spawned a subgenre: the ragazzi of Accatone, Zurlini’s “professor”, or Moretti’s “self-sufficient” all are “vitelloni”. Ciné-feel’s screening is therefore a unique opportunity to rediscover on the big screen a seminal work whose modernity and relevance remain intact over seventy years after its release.

An evening of exchange and sharing

True to its mission of promoting a lively and accessible film culture, the Ciné-feel association goes beyond just screening films. Each session is designed as a meeting, a moment of conviviality and reflection. The screening of “I Vitelloni” will be followed by a debate open to the public, allowing everyone to share their impressions, confront their analyses, and deepen their understanding of the work and its director. It is this interactive dimension that enriches the evenings organized by the passionate volunteers of Ciné-feel, who are excited to reunite with their audience for this final session of the season.
