On the morning of April 8, the Vietnamese Association of Scientific Encounters, in collaboration with the International Center for Interdisciplinary Science and Education (ICISE), École Centrale de Lyon (ECL), the University of Lyon (France), École de Génie Électrique et Électronique (EEE), Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore, organized the “Expanded ASEAN Photonics Workshop.”

Nearly 40 delegates, including professors, scientists, young researchers, and doctoral students from countries such as France, Germany, Belgium, the United Kingdom, Italy, India, China, South Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, and Australia, participated in the event.

Delegates exchanged information on the latest research advances, emerging research trends, and future development prospects in the fields of photonics and light-matter interactions.

They provided information on a wide range of in-depth topics, including nanophotonics and supersurfaces; topological photonics and non-Hermitian photonics; photonic crystals and optical networks; light-matter interactions and polariton systems; quantum optics and nonlinear optics; integrated photonics and silicon photonics; ultrafast photonics and terahertz photonics; photonics components, lasers, and revolutionary materials; photonics applications in detection, imaging, and information processing.

Dr. Nguyen Huu Ha, Deputy Director of the Department of Science and Technology of Gia Lai province, stated: “This conference not only provided an overview of the latest advances but also opened up promising research prospects for the future. The topics covered at the conference were diverse and in-depth.”

These are cutting-edge areas that contribute to laying the foundation for many advanced technologies, particularly in applications such as information transmission and processing, sensors, and the development of intelligent systems.

This workshop contributes to promoting the development of the field of photonics in Vietnam, thereby strengthening the position of the ASEAN region on the global scientific map.

According to the organizers, photonics is an advanced scientific and technological field, playing a fundamental role in many key technologies of the 21st century such as optical communications, precision detection and measurement, information processing, advanced materials, biomedicine, energy, and quantum technology.

In the context of the Fourth Industrial Revolution and trends towards digital transformation, green transformation, and sustainability, photonics is increasingly asserting its strategic role in fundamental research as well as high-tech applications.

The ASEAN region is emerging as a dynamic hub for scientific research and innovation, with a rapid increase in human resources, research infrastructure, and international cooperation in the field of photonics.

However, in-depth, systematic, and regional-international academic exchanges in this field remain limited, especially forums dedicated to new research directions such as topological photonics, non-Hermitian photonics, quantum photonics, integrated photonics, and light-matter interactions.
