In a 3-2 vote, the Riverhead Town Board decided to initiate condemnation proceedings for the Long Island Science Center property at 111 East Main Street in the Riverhead Town Square, despite opposition from community members and Science Center representatives.

Councilman Bob Kern and Town Supervisor Jerry Halpin were among those who voted against the resolution. Councilwoman Denise Merrifield, a former prosecutor, has criticized the Science Center for not providing a site plan or building permits during recent work sessions.

During the meeting, Science Center Board Member Lucy Barnes presented a stack of papers containing plans the Center is working on submitting to the town. She emphasized the importance of collaborating with the town and addressed concerns about the building’s condition and upkeep.

Alex Lipsky, the Science Center’s builder, mentioned that the building is structurally sound and refuted claims about sewage issues on the property. He also explained that the Center has invested in repairs and improvements to the building.

Despite some concerns raised during the meeting, Councilman Kern expressed confidence in the Science Center’s board and its role in the Town Square project. Supervisor Halpin, however, raised doubts about the need for condemnation proceedings and using taxpayer funds for compensation.

Councilman Ken Rothwell acknowledged the Science Center’s importance but highlighted concerns about the building’s safety and funding for necessary renovations. He expressed hope that a fair market value could be achieved for the property.

The discussion around the Science Center’s future in the Town Square project reflects ongoing debates and challenges faced by the local community and municipal authorities in Riverhead.
