American and Israeli flags are burned in the streets of Tehran. Despite the ceasefire, pro-regime Iranians have gathered to reaffirm their hostility towards Washington. “We cannot trust the United States. Until a resolution from the Security Council is adopted, we cannot trust them at all,” shares a protester.
In the streets of New York (United States), anti-war protesters are skeptical. “It may all start again in just two weeks, or even sooner. So it is a relief, but short-term”, says one of them.
The cessation of fighting was announced on the night of Tuesday, April 7, by Donald Trump. He claims to have won the war: “I agree to suspend bombings and attacks against Iran for two weeks. We have already achieved and exceeded all our objectives,” he writes on his social network.
Iran, on the other hand, announces the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. The Islamic Republic is the winner of the conflict according to Michaël Benhamou, director of the European Institute of War: “In this long war between Iran, Israel, and the United States, Iran has just won a battle. The Iranians understood that Trump only needed one thing to save face, which was to reopen Hormuz. That allows Trump to tell his base: look, I achieved something important.” The United States is considering a face-to-face meeting with Iranian representatives.
