The Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, is under fire from the opposition in his country just hours after the announcement of the ceasefire agreement between the United States and Iran.
The Israeli opposition leader, Yair Lapid, harshly criticized the ceasefire agreement reached between Washington and Tehran on Wednesday 7th April, accusing Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of failing to achieve the war’s objectives.
“Never in our history have we experienced such a political disaster,” he wrote on X, lamenting that “Israel was not even consulted when decisions regarding the foundation of our national security were made.”
“The army has accomplished everything asked of it and the population has shown remarkable resilience, but Netanyahu has failed politically, failed strategically, and has not achieved any of the goals he set for himself,” he added.
Benjamin Netanyahu had made the elimination, or at least severe degradation, of the Iranian nuclear program – described as an “existential threat” to Israel – a central objective of the war.
He also called to neutralize the ballistic missile capabilities of Iran, weaken or even overthrow the Iranian regime, and reduce Tehran’s regional influence by targeting its network of allied groups.
“It will take us years to repair the political and strategic damage caused by Netanyahu due to his arrogance, negligence, and lack of strategic planning,” said Yair Lapid.
The United States and Iran agreed on a two-week ceasefire on Tuesday, just over an hour before the expiration of Donald Trump’s ultimatum to destroy the Islamic Republic.
Israel declared its support for Trump’s decision to suspend bombings on Iran, but maintained that the ceasefire “did not include Lebanon”, where Israel is at war with Hezbollah, supported by Iran, since the group launched rocket attacks on Israel in March.
