Fano Maddix, an artist from the rich Acadian tradition, has settled in Saint-Élie-de-Caxton for a month as part of the traditional creative residency that has been taking place every April since 2014.

Describing himself as a storyteller, Fano Maddix will spend the next few weeks enriching the content of his upcoming solo show titled “Les braises sous la peau”. He focuses on Acadian folklore tales and explores stories collected from the 1950s to the 1980s without altering the characters or plot.

In press releases, Fano Maddix is described as balancing tradition and innovation. He enjoys tales featuring bold heroes, witches, shapeshifters, and characters that transform from human to animal, tree, or river.

The element of innovation is evident in how he delivers his stories to the audience. He blends ancient imagination with contemporary themes in an improvisational storytelling style that departs from scripted theatre.

By the end of the month, Fano Maddix will engage with the residents of Caxton before showcasing his work at a residency event scheduled on Sunday, April 26 at Mel and Nico’s place. He currently resides in Fred Pellerin’s residence in the heart of the village and admires Pellerin’s storytelling prowess.

Identifying as queer, Fano Maddix finds a sense of identity in folktales that offer a broad spectrum of representation beyond traditional norms. Folklore, he believes, inherently embraces diverse perspectives, making it a realm where queer representation is more prevalent than conventional thinking.

Remember that in April 2014, following consultations with the Quebec storytelling community, the Quebec Storytelling Group (RCQ) launched the creative residency in Saint-Élie-de-Caxton to support creators. This initiative, in collaboration with Fred Pellerin, aims to establish a sustainable and beneficial project for the storytelling community.
