French President Emmanuel Macron is presiding over the high-level segment of the One Health Summit in Lyon on Tuesday, on the occasion of World Health Day, bringing together nearly 3,000 participants, including several heads of state and government, to discuss the reform of the global health architecture.

The President is scheduled to participate in a meeting focused on organizing global health governance, as well as several panels on science, communicable and non-communicable diseases, according to a program provided by the presidency.

The day includes welcoming delegations at the Lyon prefecture in the late morning, followed by a working meeting on the reform of the global health system, before the President’s visit to the Congress Center for the official opening of the summit. A speech is expected in the mid-afternoon, followed by a series of thematic discussions with international actors present.

Taking place from April 5 to 7, the One Health Summit is part of the One Planet Summit and aims to promote the “One Health” approach, which emphasizes the interdependence between human, animal, plant health, and ecosystems. This approach is presented as a tool for preventing and managing health crises, especially against emerging diseases.

The summit brings together representatives from states, international organizations, the private sector, civil society, and the scientific community, with the goal of generating operational solutions and strengthening the resilience of the global health system.

Security and traffic measures have been implemented in Lyon, especially around the prefecture and the Cité internationale, where several routes are closed to traffic. Access remains authorized for residents and professionals under security control.

This international event confirms Lyon’s position as a major hub in the field of global health. The city is home to the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), a specialized institution of the World Health Organization (WHO), and the WHO Academy, inaugurated in 2024.

With a recognized industrial and scientific fabric, as well as reference hospital facilities such as the Hospices Civils de Lyon and the Léon Bérard Center, the Lyon metropolitan area is presented by the organizers as an ecosystem conducive to the development of the “One Health” approach.

This summit comes at a time marked by the increase in health and environmental crises, fueling discussions on the need to reform international coordination mechanisms in health.
