A simple line on a LinkedIn profile reignited the hype around GTA 6. A former graphics programmer at Rockstar Games, who worked at Rockstar Studios between 2020 and 2023, mentioned working on a “next generation procedural breakable glass system for vehicles and props” before the mention quickly disappeared, as reported by ComicBook.com.

Since then, specialized media outlets like Rockstarmag, Dexerto, and Mundobytes have corroborated the information and confirmed that this new generation breakable glass system would be integrated into the RAGE 9 engine. This goes beyond just a visual effect: it serves as a technological showcase for the release of Grand Theft Auto VI planned for November 19, 2026, on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. But what exactly does this famous procedural breakable glass system entail, and why is it creating so much excitement within the community?

Developer spent nearly three years on GTA 6 as a graphics programmer, with the main mission being the implementation of the procedural breakable glass system on vehicles, building windows, and decorative objects. The CV also mentioned creating high-fidelity capture tools and enhancing various rendering subsystems, indicating that this was not just a simple lab prototype.

Screenshots of the profile, taken around March 23, 2026, clearly show the wording before its deletion. While it cannot be confirmed that the feature will arrive intact in the final version, the swift removal reinforces the credibility of the leak rather than the opposite. This represents the attention to detail that has already established the technical reputation of Red Dead Redemption 2, still used as a benchmark eight years after its release.

In GTA 5 or even Red Dead Redemption 2, glass breakage relies mainly on pre-calculated animations: no matter where you shoot, the pattern of breakage remains generally the same. With GTA 6’s procedural breakable glass system, each impact would be calculated in real-time based on the point of contact, the force, and the angle of impact.

Specifically, a bullet in a corner of a windshield, a high-speed crash, or a brick thrown through a window would produce cracks, shards, and different falling fragments each time. Mundobytes compares this level of detail to what a game like Control offers, but applied to a vast and living open world.

Integrated into the RAGE 9 engine, this system must coexist with traffic, NPCs, weather, and vehicle physics without overloading the CPU and GPU. This opens up scenarios of carjacking, car shootouts, window heists, or rainy chases where glass breakage becomes a gameplay and staging element, not just a scripted decoration.

This procedural breakable glass showcases Rockstar Games’ intention to make GTA 6 a new technical standard on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. As with any feature revealed through LinkedIn, there is a risk: if destruction impacts performance too much, especially in the densest areas of the map, it could be simplified or limited.

It is still unknown if this system will be present everywhere, in all missions or in the future online mode, and what the exact differences will be compared to GTA 5 in terms of graphic settings. But even if the final version is slightly less ambitious than the prototypes from 2020-2023, the fact that a dedicated team has worked on the glass for several years shows how far the studio is willing to go to make every heist, crash, and getaway through the streets of Leonida believable.
