Cinema: Super Mario Galaxy makes an excellent start, although slightly lower than the first
It was the expected cinema figure this weekend and despite some records here and there, Super Mario Galaxy ultimately did not beat the opening of Super Mario Bros even though we are not far off: 372.5 million dollars worldwide for this sequel, compared to 387.8 million for the first.
It is currently the best global launch of 2026 and still the 5th best start in the history of animated films (and also in the Universal ranking).
Other cinema news:
- According to DanielRPK, the first test screening feedback for Resident Evil is “excellent” (worth checking if the result will please fans).
- Amazon Prime’s Head of Programming, Peter Friedlander, is still studying various scenarios for the adaptation of Mass Effect, and hopes that the result will appeal to “non-gamers”.
- The sets for the Live adaptation of Elden Ring (potentially the biggest budget in A24’s history) have been set up in the UK, hinting at a soon start of filming.
