The results represent the first reactions of public opinion following the strikes carried out by the United States and Israel. These operations resulted in the death of the Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and targeted military sites as well as nuclear installations across the country.
A marked partisan divide
The opinion on these strikes authorized by President Trump deeply divides the country according to political affiliations:
- Democrats: A very large majority (74%) approves of the military action, while only 7% approve.
- Republicans: A majority (55%) approves of the strikes, while 13% disapprove and 31% are undecided.
- Independents: They also lean against the intervention, with 44% disapproving and 19% approving.
Can American public opinion change its support?
Support from public opinion could change depending on the outcome of the conflict. Nearly half of Americans state that they could be more inclined to support the continuation of military action if it leads to the installation of a pro-US government or the definitive end of the Iranian nuclear program.
However, the risks of rejection are high: 54% of respondents believe they would be less inclined to support military action if it resulted in American casualties. Likewise, support would decrease significantly in case of escalation towards a broader regional conflict in the Middle East.
What impact on the global standing of the United States?
Public opinion is divided on President Trump’s strategy: 48% of Americans believe that his willingness to use military force strengthens the position of the United States in the world, while an equal proportion (48%) thinks it weakens it.
