Former European Commissioner Criticizes Ursula von der Leyen’s Response to Donald Trump
Former European Commissioner Thierry Breton lamented the lack of firmness shown by Ursula von der Leyen in dealing with Donald Trump. Breton stated on RTL that the European Union must learn from a world where trust-based relations no longer exist.
“Ursula von der Leyen spoke too much with Donald Trump,” criticized Thierry Breton on Sunday, April 5. Speaking on the Grand Jury RTL – Public Senate – Le Figaro – M6, the former European Commissioner for the internal market reiterated his criticism of the President of the European Commission, this time denouncing her lack of firmness in dealing with Donald Trump.
“I find that Mrs. von der Leyen listened too much to the detriment of our interests,” Breton lamented. “We applaud accepting a unilateral 15% tariff, being entirely vassalized by the United States, buying $750 billion worth of hydrocarbons…it was obviously very humiliating,” he judged.
Despite his critique, Breton does not believe the European Union should end its relationship with Donald Trump. He emphasized, “The United States remains our allies.” He urged that in a world where trust-based relationships no longer work, lessons should be learned to equip for power dynamics and balance the U.S.-Europe relationship.
Criticism towards the United States
“We still have 450 million fellow citizens to protect. We are a massive democracy, a huge economy. We cannot have our sole life goal be the vassal of the United States,” continued the former European Commissioner.
Thierry Breton also criticized President Trump’s communication regarding the Middle East war. With Trump escalating threats on Iran as the deadline of his ultimatum to Tehran approaches on April 6, Breton denounced, “When we listen to Donald Trump, we are practically on the brink of this war every other day.”
