MILWAUKEE (AP) – An NBA investigation is ongoing involving the Milwaukee Bucks and Giannis Antetokounmpo over the two-time MVP’s injury status. The NBA issued a statement on Saturday offering an update on the investigation following Antetokounmpo’s comments to the media that he is healthy and wants to play. He has been out with a knee injury since March 15.
Antetokounmpo left a game against the Indiana Pacers on March 15 after a dunk and has missed 11 consecutive games since. The Bucks ruled him out for Sunday’s game against the Memphis Grizzlies due to a left knee hyperextension and bone bruise.
The NBA stated that there are disputes over whether Antetokounmpo declined to participate in team workouts as part of his return-to-play process, and the league continues to investigate the situation. ESPN first reported the investigation.
The 31-year-old Antetokounmpo expressed his desire to return to the court despite the Bucks being eliminated from playoff contention. He emphasized that he is a player who gets paid to play and feels healthy.
This controversy arises amid speculation about Antetokounmpo’s future with the Bucks. He becomes eligible to sign a contract extension in October or could become a free agent after the 2026-27 season if he doesn’t sign. Bucks coach Doc Rivers expressed his preference for handling disagreements privately.
Antetokounmpo has a long history with the Bucks, having played his entire career with the team since being drafted in 2013. He believes that the team should have understood his desire to remain on the court despite playoff hopes fading.
