On April 10th, the pianist will unveil CALDEIRA at Aztec Musique. For this album, he surrounds himself with a high-level section including Michel Alibo on bass, Arnaud Dolmen on drums, and Godwin Louis on saxophone whose virtuosity connects New York to the West Indies.
A trio at the heart of the volcano
The album’s name is not chosen at random: the “caldeira,” this circular depression at the heart of the volcanoes, becomes here the metaphor of a bubbling music. The trio functions as a living entity where the piano carries the fire, the bass ensures the earthly anchoring, and the drums infuse the air and movement. In the hands of these three accomplices, the music becomes a space of dense and luminous freedom that engages both the mind and body.
Caribbean heritage in service of modern jazz
This new opus is part of Mario Canonge’s rich journey. From his beginnings with Ultramarine in the 1970s to his collaborations with Dee Dee Bridgewater or Roy Hargrove, he has continuously built bridges between biguine, mazurka, zouk, and jazz. With CALDEIRA, this quest for identity takes on an almost ritual dimension, fueled by constant artistic demand and a rare complicity with his musicians.
An incandescent maturity
The contribution of Godwin Louis on the alto saxophone further expands the horizon, placing Canonge’s compositions in the grand lineage of contemporary global jazz. As the pianist confides, “CALDEIRA expresses an urgent need to externalize the fire that drives me and nourishes my music.” The result is an album reaching full maturity, where improvisation and harmonic finesse create soundscapes in perpetual motion.
CALDEIRA – Release on April 10, 2026 (Aztec Musique / Integral).
