On the night of Wednesday 1st to Thursday 2nd of April, Donald Trump gave a self-congratulatory speech on American victories, even as the conflict appears deadlocked with no clear solution, threatening the global economy with a major crisis.

From the White House, Donald Trump asserts that the United States is not done with Iran yet: “We will hit them very hard over the next two to three weeks. We will bring them back to the Stone Age where they belong.” The American threat does not go unanswered. The Iranian army promises crushing attacks against the United States and Israel. “This war will continue until your humiliation, dishonor, permanent regrets, and surrender,” said Ebrahim Zolfaghari, spokesperson for the Iranian military command.

After more than a month of conflict, the Secretary-General of the United Nations deplores the continuation of a war responsible for thousands of deaths, with civilians increasingly becoming targets. Antonio Guterres reiterates his call for the immediate cessation of Israeli-American and Iranian strikes: “We are on the brink of a wider war that would engulf the Middle East with dramatic impacts across the planet.”

China demands an immediate halt to the war in the Middle East and affirms that there is no military solution to the conflict. “We urge the parties involved to start peace talks as soon as possible, to resolve the conflict through dialogue and negotiation, and to ensure not to worsen the repercussions on the global economy and world energy security,” stated Mao Ning, spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Beijing blames the United States, Israel, and their bombings on Iran as the main cause of the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz.

This theme was also addressed by the American president: “Countries around the world that receive oil through the Strait of Hormuz must take care of this passage. They must protect it, take control of it. They can do it easily.” Donald Trump’s statements disappointed financial markets, resulting in a downturn. Oil prices have risen again.
