Donald Trump fired his Justice Minister Pam Bondi on Thursday, one of his loyal followers who was criticized for her handling of the Epstein case. This decision follows criticism from both Republicans and Democrats on her handling of the sexual criminal case, who died in prison in 2019, as well as a series of failed attempts by her ministry to criminally prosecute targets explicitly designated by the American president.

Donald Trump praised the outgoing minister’s action against crime on his Truth Social network, stating she will be “relocated to the private sector.” Pam Bondi thanked the president for entrusting her with this position, calling it the “honor of a lifetime”, and specified that she would oversee the transition in the coming month with Todd Blanche, former personal lawyer of Donald Trump, currently number 2 in the ministry.

Todd Blanche was at the forefront of the Epstein case when the Justice Department released over three million pages of the sexual criminal’s files on January 30, under a law passed by Congress. Donald Trump is considering appointing Lee Zeldin, head of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), to succeed Pam Bondi, as reported by several media outlets.

“The most corrupt minister in history”

The leader of the Democrats in the House of Representatives, Hakeem Jeffries, congratulated the departure of “the most corrupt Justice Minister in modern American history.” He added, “This long-awaited firing will not be enough to restore the credibility of the Justice Department or to rehabilitate this rotten and out-of-control administration.”

According to Democratic senator Elizabeth Warren, “We will remember Ms. Bondi for obstructing the release of Epstein dossier documents and using the Justice Department against Donald Trump’s political opponents.” The main Democratic member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, Dick Durbin, also blames Pam Bondi for “instrumentalizing for Donald Trump’s personal benefit” in a statement but notes that she “apparently didn’t go far enough to please him.”

Several media outlets, including ABC and MS Now, attribute Pam Bondi’s firing to Donald Trump’s reproach for not sufficiently indicting his personal enemies, while The New York Times or CNN explain it by her handling of the Epstein case. In 2020, this former Florida attorney general was part of Donald Trump’s legal team during his impeachment trial in the Senate, where he was acquitted by the then-Republican majority. As Justice Minister, Pam Bondi stood out for her unconditional defense of the Republican president, especially during stormy hearings in Congress.

“Trump’s revenge tool”

In February, several Democratic voices had accused her of “burying” the Epstein case by not complying with the law requiring the Trump administration to fully disclose this explosive dossier. They also questioned the minister about the criminal prosecutions guided by the president against targets of his vengeance, several of which spectacularly backfired.

“You have turned the Justice Department into Trump’s vengeance tool. Trump orders indictments like ordering pizzas, and you comply,” Jamie Raskin, the principal Democratic member of the House Judiciary Committee, told her.

The justice system has dismissed charges against former FBI director James Comey and New York State Attorney General Letitia James. Citizen juries refused to indict six Democratic officials who had urged the military to disobey the administration’s “illegal orders.”
