It is only the latest in a long list of sudden and unjustified departures since the beginning of Donald Trump’s second term. In the midst of a war against Iran for several weeks, the Pentagon announced on Thursday, April 2, the departure of the highest-ranking officer in the army, General Randy George. According to CBS News, which first revealed the information, this departure was dictated by the US Secretary of Defense, Pete Hegseth.

Randy George will “leave his position as the 41st Chief of Staff of the Army with immediate effect,” Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell wrote on X, also wishing him “a wonderful retirement.” However, he did not give the reason for this sudden departure.

Speaking to CBS News, a senior official from the Department of Defense said they were “grateful for his service,” but “it was time for a change in direction within the army.” Just a reminder, General Randy George, a graduate of the prestigious West Point Military Academy, who served in Iraq and Afghanistan, was appointed to this position in 2023, during the term of Democratic President Joe Biden.
