Donald Trump criticized the lack of French support in the Iran war. As usual, he didn’t hesitate to taunt Emmanuel Macron, making a very personal remark during a private lunch with his counterpart, as seen in a video briefly posted on the White House’s YouTube channel: “His wife treats him very badly, and he’s barely recovering from taking that punch. Emmanuel, we would appreciate some help in the Gulf (Persian).”

Tensions have flared between the two presidents. Christophe Barbier, a political commentator for LCI, explains, “Donald Trump targets France because France has a powerful army. It’s already on the ground.” The French presidential palace expressed surprise at this message, stating, “France has not changed its position since day one [of the conflict].”

“When a geopolitical dispute turns into a ‘guys’ story,’ it’s worrying for the West,” Christophe Barbier believes. The still-blocked Strait of Hormuz could be a threat wielded by the Trump administration. “It’s not our problem. It’s France’s or the countries that will use the canal,” declared the American president.

Christophe Barbier reminds us that “Emmanuel Macron refuses to fall into this provocation and to intervene earlier than planned in the Strait of Hormuz.” The head of state advocates “a return to stability and re-opening in good order, peacefully, in consultation with all parties involved.”
