The daily newspaper “Ha’Aretz”, established in 1919 in Hebrew in British-occupied Palestine, is the reference journal for Israeli politicians and intellectuals. It is owned by the Schocken Group, from the Jewish publishing dynasty founded by Salman Schocken in Germany and later in Palestine between the two world wars. Its current publisher is Amos Schocken and its editor-in-chief is Aluf Benn.

Today, leaning towards liberal left, “Ha’Aretz” has long maintained a centrist line close to the former liberal Jewish parties in Palestine and later in Israel, an independent line from the long-dominant labor movement (which had its own press organs) and even more so from the nationalist right. The simplicity of its layout serves an editorial policy focused on analysis and debate. Its Sabbath edition is enhanced with two supplements, one on politics and one on culture.

The Hebrew-language website offers the complete printed edition with additional sections (blogs, thematic files, etc.). The English-language site, while less extensive, partly reproduces the contents of the original Hebrew version but also includes its own sections.

The print circulation is 72,000 copies for the Hebrew-language “Ha’Aretz” (110,000 on weekends) and 24,000 for its English edition. However, online, the English-language site is more popular thanks to a large foreign readership: European Jews, North American Jews, and non-Jewish observers of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
