Interview: Army recruitment director reveals behind-the-scenes operations

General Arnaud Goujon took on the role of recruitment director for the army in August 2024. Managing the youth recruitment department, he oversees the massive task of hiring around 15,000 soldiers annually, making the army the leading recruiter in France. Beyond just numbers, his mission involves adapting the army’s human resources strategy to the demographic and technological challenges of the next decade.

Recruitment Needs: General Arnaud Goujon stated that the army recruits on an industrial scale, aiming for about 15,000 new recruits every year. This recruitment process involves both quantity and quality, focusing on various roles like combat, infantry, cavalry, engineering, and more specialized fields like digital technology, logistics, and maintenance.

Image of the Army: While the common perception of the army is often focused on foot soldiers, the reality is much more diverse and complex. The army requires various infrastructure support like energy networks, telecommunications, water, and transportation. They recruit not only for combat roles but also for specialized positions in different fields.

Challenges and Future Planning: As the army anticipates challenges in the next decade, three main trends are concerning. Firstly, the decline in the age group targeted for recruitment. Secondly, the drop in interest in science-related vocations. And thirdly, the competition for technical skills. To address these issues, partnerships with vocational schools and technical preparatory military schools have been established.

Recruitment Revival: After facing setbacks in recruitment activities due to the pandemic, efforts have been made to re-engage with potential recruits. The focus now is not just on quantity but on attracting specialized profiles, leading to targeted campaigns for recruitment in digital professions.

Overall, the army is adapting to changing demographics and technological advancements to ensure it can meet its human resource needs effectively in the coming years.
