Three years after a successful run, the Mario universe returns to the big screen with “Super Mario Galaxy.” A highly anticipated sequel that makes you want to (re)watch the first film. Here’s why and where to watch it now.

After celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Super Mario Bros video game last year, Nintendo’s mascot is back in full force on the silver screen. This week sees the release of “Super Mario Galaxy,” the sequel to the animated film “Super Mario Bros. the movie,” which had smashed all records.

Upon its release, the feature film had the best opening in history for an animated film, collecting over $377 million in one weekend, surpassing even “Frozen 2.” A global phenomenon that explains the anticipation surrounding this new intergalactic adventure.

But beware: “Super Mario Galaxy” is a sequel. To fully enjoy the story, it is better to have seen the first installment.

Super Mario Bros. the movie: what is it about?

In this first film, we follow Mario and Luigi, two plumbers from Brooklyn trying to start their business. An unexpected opportunity then leads them into the sewers before a mysterious pipe propels them into a fantastic world.

Separated from his brother, Mario lands in the Mushroom Kingdom. Helped by Toad and Princess Peach, he embarks on a quest to find Luigi, who has fallen into the clutches of the fearsome Bowser.

The film skillfully mixes humor, action, and references to cult video games, laying the groundwork for the universe that will be developed in “Super Mario Galaxy.” An essential introduction to understand the stakes of the second installment.

A promising sequel

With “Super Mario Galaxy,” the film reaches a new milestone by drawing inspiration from one of the most iconic games of the franchise, released on Wii in 2007. The vocal cast remains unchanged, including the original voices of Chris Pratt (Guardians of the Galaxy), Anya Taylor-Joy (Split), and Jack Black (Jumanji).

New characters also make their appearance, such as Princess Rosalina or Bowser Jr., heralding an even more ambitious and spectacular adventure.

Should you rewatch Super Mario Bros before going to the cinema?
