President Trump made history by becoming the first sitting president to attend oral arguments at the U.S. Supreme Court. He was present to observe a case challenging one of his executive orders.

The case, known as Barbara v. Trump, revolves around an executive order aimed at denying automatic citizenship to babies born in the U.S. to parents who were either in the country illegally or temporarily. The order has faced legal challenges and has been deemed unconstitutional by lower courts.

The dispute over birthright citizenship, guaranteed by the 14th Amendment since 1868, is at the center of this case. The Trump administration appealed the lower court rulings to the Supreme Court, which is expected to issue a decision by late June or early July.

This is not the first time Trump’s policies have been scrutinized by the Supreme Court, but it is the first time a sitting president has attended oral arguments. Trump’s presence has sparked controversy as it could be seen as an attempt to influence the independent judicial process.

Despite concerns about potential interference, Trump decided to attend the oral arguments in person. His attendance marks a departure from past presidents, who typically interacted with the Court indirectly.

Trump’s decision to attend the proceedings has raised questions and drawn criticism. However, he expressed his interest in being present to witness the argument firsthand.

His earlier plan to attend oral arguments in a separate case, involving U.S. businesses challenging his tariffs, was eventually abandoned. The Treasury Secretary attended in his place, and the Court ruled against Trump’s tariffs.

Following the Supreme Court’s decision, Trump held a press conference where he criticized conservative judges who ruled against him. He expressed disappointment with some justices while praising others.

Trump’s engagement with the Supreme Court and his remarks about the justices reflect his contentious relationship with the judicial system. Despite his grievances, he acknowledged the inherent challenges of navigating the legal process.
