Focused on commitment, citizenship, and memory, defense classes are popular in Vendée middle schools. There are currently ten classes that came together on Tuesday in Les Herbiers to participate in several workshops involving the military, the SDIS, and road safety.

“The goal is not recruitment,” assures Lieutenant Colonel Guillaume Outtier, assistant departmental military delegate. Instead, the objective is to better understand defense-related professions. Around a hundred teenagers, all enrolled in defense classes in Vendée, gathered in Les Herbiers on Tuesday to discover and understand the role of certain regiments in the army, the SDIS, and road safety. “These are truly classes where we work on commitment, citizenship, and memory,” details Chantal Mouton, history and geography teacher at Arnaud Beltrame College in Luçon. Quite a program.
