Ohio – If you’re seeing more orange barrels than flowers popping up, congratulations – you made it to spring in Ohio. This year, the Ohio Department of Transportation is kicking off a record-breaking $3.4 billion construction season across the state.

    What You Need To Know

    – This year’s construction season features 977 new projects – More than 4,500 miles of roadway are set to be improved – Ohio is spending more per capita compared to other states for roadway safety

While spring may mean warmth and sunshine to some, it also means investment in Ohio’s infrastructure, especially to ODOT. This year’s construction season features 977 new projects, which includes more than 4,500 miles of roadway that are set to be improved. ODOT said that’s equivalent to driving from Columbus to San Diego, Calif. and back. Of the project, 36 of them have a value of over $10 million, and 80 cents of every dollar that’s invested this year will go to preservation of existing bridges and roads, according to ODOT.

Additionally, Ohio is spending more per capita compared to other states for roadway safety, with 174 safety projects set for this year. “As a state that makes and moves things, we must have a safe transportation system that is well maintained,” said Gov. Mike DeWine, R-Ohio. “As they do each year, our ODOT teams will be making enhancements to Ohio’s roadways to better protect everyone traveling on them.”

Since 2019, ODOT has invested $15.5 billion into 6,067 projects across the state. “This record-setting construction season is a testament to ODOT’s focus on building a more resilient transportation system and saving lives,” said ODOT Director Pamela Boratyn. “This investment positions Ohio as the heart of the nation’s supply chain and continues to fuel the state’s economic engine.”
