Issam Rachyq-Ahrad tells a personal story in his one-man show “Ma République et moi” at La Criée from April 1st to 8th. Reflecting on his life, he shares his mother’s journey from Morocco to France at the age of 16, where she faced challenges wearing a headscarf that affected him.
Issam credits public theater for opening up his life and allowing him to express his double culture and upbringing. His show, triggered by a 2019 incident involving a veiled woman at a regional council meeting, engages the audience in conversations about identity and language, challenging stereotypes and embracing Arabic culture.
Throughout “Ma République et moi,” Issam navigates his personal struggles and invites the audience to engage with Arabic language and culture. This tender and humorous portrait of his mother reflects on unity and self-discovery through a blend of public theater and personal storytelling.
