An Indonesian UN peacekeeper was killed in Adchit Al Qusayr municipality, southern Lebanon, on Sunday, according to Indonesian and human rights officials, as Israeli forces pummeled parts of the country overnight.

Three other staffers were injured by “indirect artillery fire” near the Indonesian contingent position for the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), a peacekeeping mission, according to the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The killing took place against the backdrop of “reported hostilities between the Israeli military and armed groups in southern Lebanon,” the ministry said in a statement, calling for an investigation into the killing.

“Indonesia reiterates its condemnation of Israel’s attacks in southern Lebanon and calls on all parties to respect Lebanon’s sovereignty and territorial integrity,” the ministry added.

CNN has reached out to the Israeli military for comment.

For decades, the Israeli military has invaded, occupied and attacked parts of Lebanon in a campaign that it says targets the Iranian-backed militant group Hezbollah.

Then in 2000, the UNIFIL established a de-facto area along the southern Lebanese border with Israel, after Israeli forces withdrew following their second invasion. That Blue Line spans 120 kilometers (around 75 miles). The UNIFIL troops are tasked with monitoring border violations and protecting civilians from imminent violence.

Earlier this month, Israeli forces occupied areas south of the Litani River and told Lebanese residents to leave the land as part of a broader assault after Hezbollah fired projectiles into Israel. Israeli strikes on Lebanon have killed 1,238 people since March 2, the Lebanese health ministry said Sunday.

A slew of Lebanese and Indonesian officials called for an investigation into the killing of the UN peacekeeper over the weekend, with Lebanon’s President Joseph Aoun “commending the sacrifices” of UNIFIL staffers in the south.
