Facing the increase in incivility on the field, the Alsace football district equips some referees with body cameras during high-risk matches. The device was used for the second time on Sunday, March 29, during the match between Sessenheim and Mothern.

Could amateur football referees be systematically equipped with cameras? The French Football Federation has decided to test this device.

Currently, only about thirty districts in France, including Alsace, are participating in this experimentation phase. The goal is clear: better protect referees from incivility, whether from players or supporters.

On Sunday, March 29, in Alsace, a referee was equipped with a camera for only the second time in the district’s history. This time, the camera was used during a match in Division 1 between Sessenheim and Mothern.

Despite the seemingly relaxed atmosphere on-site with the sun, spectators, and barbecue on the sidelines, the match is considered “sensitive” by the Alsace district.

As for the players, the presence of this equipment does not fundamentally change the way they approach the match. “It doesn’t really impact us,” says the captain of Sessenheim. “We are in our game, we totally ignore it.” While recognizing the benefit of the device for the safety of referees, he nevertheless regrets a certain evolution in football: “It is good for their protection, but it’s a bit sad to have to come to this.”

Everyone agrees that it is normal to feel frustrated towards the referee, but it should never go beyond heated discussion.

The funding for these cameras is entirely covered by the French Football Federation.
