United States: Divided MAGA on Iran? Why the rebellion against Donald Trump is not happening

Tucker Carlson, Megyn Kelly, Marjorie Taylor Greene – Three highly influential figures among the Maga galaxy. Three critics of American intervention in Iran to the point that, since the start of Operation “Fury épique on February 28, a widely accepted observation in the press and among some observers is that the Maga camp is divided on Iran. Gabe Fleisher, author of the newsletter Wake Up To Politics, popular in Washington, disagrees. This young American journalist advocates for a data-driven approach, which he prioritizes over compelling but sometimes unrealistic narratives. As he explains to L’Express, “the war in Iran is massively unpopular among Democrats, not very popular among Independents, but survey after survey shows that Republicans support it at high levels.” A Politico poll conducted with Public First from March 13 to 18, for example, reveals that 61% of non-Maga pro-Trump voters approve of the operation. This number rises to 81% among self-identified Maga voters. Despite Donald Trump’s broken promise not to intervene militarily abroad, Maga voters remain loyal to him.

Would we have imagined a rebellion from the Trumpist base? Gabe Fleisher sees it more as an optical illusion. First, if emblematic figures of the Maga movement, with significant audiences and influential platforms among the president’s supporters, have indeed distanced themselves on Iran, “these voices are not necessarily followed on this subject,” tempers the 24-year-old journalist, whose newsletter is read daily by 60,000 people, including Kamala Harris’s husband, Doug Emhoff.

Maga, a false ideological cap

Furthermore, Gabe Fleisher adds, polls take time to be conducted correctly, “so at the beginning, we mainly hear from these influential figures. This fuels the first wave of articles.” “Ultimately,” he continues, “as we have seen repeatedly over the past fourteen months, you can be called Marjorie Taylor Greene, have many followers on social media, or be Tucker Carlson and have a large audience, when Donald Trump is opposed to other figures in the Republican Party, Maga voters stand behind him.”
