The French players shone this Sunday during the finals of the WTT Contender tournament in Tunis, with Flavien Coton winning the singles title and the duo of Florian Bourrassaud and Esteban Dorr dominating the doubles.
Flavien Coton lived up to his status as the number 1 seed in the WTT Contender tournament in Tunis, defeating Hiroto Shinozuka in the final. The match started evenly, but the French player then fell behind. Conceding seven points in a row, Flavien Coton found himself trailing by one set. The second set was a back-and-forth battle between the two players in the first ten exchanges. It was at this moment that the Frenchman accelerated, scoring 6-3 against the Japanese player. The third set saw Flavien Coton take the lead with an initial 4-0. Despite Hiroto Shinozuka gradually closing the gap to tie at seven points each, it was the French player who eventually emerged victorious after five consecutive exchanges, leading three sets to one. The end of the match was a solo performance by the Nordiste player, who demonstrated solid defense. He only needed one match point to seal the fate of the final (5-11, 11-8, 11-9, 12-10, 11-7 in 42 minutes), succeeding last year’s winner Félix Lebrun.
Bourrassaud and Dorr continue their success in doubles
Prior to the singles final, French table tennis had already achieved success in Tunis, as the duo of Florian Bourrassaud and Esteban Dorr claimed the men’s doubles title. Facing Indian pair Manush Shah and Harmeet Desai, the French players took control from the start, winning the first set convincingly. Despite a strong start by the Indian pair in the second set, the French team managed to equalize before eventually taking the lead. The third set initially saw an impressive performance from Florian Bourrassaud and Esteban Dorr, who built a lead of five points. However, the Indian pair managed to level the score at ten points each, before the French players regained their composure and secured the lead once again. The fourth set was closely contested, but Bourrassaud and Dorr ultimately gained a definitive advantage. With their opponents making an error on their first match point, the French duo sealed the fate of the final (11-6, 9-11, 12-10, 11-7 in 33 minutes), earning their second WTT Contender title and continuing their success after winning the WTT Feeder tournament in Varazdin on March 16.
