At Inrae, science is experienced in the field. Students, accompanied by their teacher Olivier Rougier and lab assistant Jean-Marie Le Guen, discovered a site dedicated to the feeding of rainbow trout. Guided by Frédéric Terrier, a research engineer, the high school students reached the source of the Eschourdes, where the water, at a constant temperature of 17°C, feeds the hydrographic basin of Chalosse. Exchange of Atmosphere The first significant step was the atmospheric exchanger, which enriches the water with oxygen while removing nitrogen and carbon dioxide, ensuring ideal conditions for breeding. The visit continued at the heart of the facilities, where about a hundred basins house trout at different stages of growth. A highlight of the morning was when Inès Chamberon, a doctoral student, presented her future research project on the influence of temperature and oxygen levels on their development, in order to anticipate the effects of heatwaves. Mrs. Cardona, a researcher, also mentioned the site in Saint-Pée-sur-Nivelle, in the Basque Country, where the NuMeA team (Nutrition, Metabolism, Aquaculture) conducts research on fish. Frédéric Terrier presented the work that led to a reduction in the use of fishmeal, decreased from 50% to 20%, in favor of plant-based alternatives. Beyond the facilities, the students were impressed by the academic backgrounds of the speakers.
